Welcome to this free eLearning Resource on Careers for Australian students in the
primary, middle school and senior years (Years 5 - 12).
The Design Concept is based on the local Shopping Mall and became a “Careers
Market”.
The website has been created to use "jobs" as a vehicle
to encourage students to improve their literacy, numeracy and critical
thinking skills. Technology is used wherever possible to introduce students
to new practical and mostly free websites, games and apps.
The website tries to break job stereotypes eg. female
truckies or disabled livestock farmer to a young inventor of apps. We
endeavour to encourage students (and teachers and parents) to read and learn
about different jobs and the people who are engaged (or were engaged) with
these jobs to show the students that they, no matter what their
circumstance, could aspire to these jobs.
There is a special emphasis for Rural, Regional and
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students to
inspire these students to think about further
education TAFE & University.
It is also hoped to open up more pathways for each of
the students using this website.
The website can be used as a class or an individual activity for students
from a single lesson to an integrated units of work. With its use of
technology and encouraging students to explore, this website can become an
engaging online activity that students find fascinating and absorbing.
One Careers Teacher said “I decided to use “On the Job” as an activity
for disengaged students in Years 9 – 10 and found that not only were they
interested and actively engaged with the website and all they could do
there, but, more importantly their Literacy Skills were markedly improved.
Thanks “On the Job!””
In summary, “On the Job” website is a great way for students to learn about different
jobs, to play games and other activities about those jobs, watch YouTube
videos, download free apps, read stories of people who have worked at this
job and, have links to industry websites.
